We are delighted to be recognised and awarded for our approach to sustainability in working with Bord Bia as a proud member of Ireland’s Origin Green Sustainability Programme. Our commitment toward sustainability and following environmentally friendly practices ensures that sustainability is genuinely at the heart of everything we do.

What is Origin Green?

Origin Green is Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme. It is the worlds' only national food and drink sustainability programme, enabling the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.

The benefits of Origin Green are more environmentally aware farms, an important focus on community and more sustainable food production which ultimately contribute to sustainable livelihoods.

The Bord Bia Origin Green programme is aligned with the EU Farm to Fork strategy. The benefits of Origin Green are more environmentally aware farms, an important focus on community and more sustainable food and drink production which ultimately contribute to sustainable livelihoods. This is what makes Ireland’s food and drink produce the first choice globally; it is trusted as sustainably produced by people who care.

Sustainability Programme Gold Member 2023

Within our team, we foster a culture of responsibility for securing a sustainable future while creating the best experience for shoppers.  As an active participant in this programme, we have reviewed all aspects of our growing activity & production processes to identify areas where we can enhance our operations and improve our credentials as an environmentally friendly organisation. Many initiatives have already been implemented and further ambitious plans are being advanced.

Spotlight Target Area: Energy & Emissions

Energy is a vital resource for us to grow mushrooms in our three Irish farm locations, where temperature-controlled growing houses are needed to ensure the highest quality harvests. We targeted a reduction in our energy usage per tonne output within our 2021-2024 Origin Green Plan. During the past year, we successfully lowered their energy consumption in all Irish three sites and were on average 13% ahead of our milestone target.

Initiatives across our farms included the installation of new technology across the site allowing to control temperatures more closely throughout the days. Additionally, we installed LED lighting and updated fan systems to use fresh air instead of cooling technology to balance the use of fresh air and mechanical cooling.

As a result, we reduced our direct carbon emissions across their business by 8%. Solar PV systems in some of our farming locations further supported an improved carbon footprint, reducing the demand on the national grid.

Approach to Sustainability:

‘Doing the right thing’ is our core philosophy driving us to establish sustainable business processes across our farms and production facilities. In 2022, our Packaging, Emissions, Water, Community Engagement, and Employee Wellbeing targets all achieved exemplary results, exceeding many targets.
